SAGB Membership
The Federation are now members of the Shellfish Association of Great Britain. The SAGB assists and promotes the sustainable development of the Shellfish Industry in the United Kingdom.
Shellfish is a huge part of the UK fishing industry and plays an important role in retail fishmongering and membership means that we can gain insight and information from experts in this industry
Sue MacKenzie, our Vice President, recently attended the 53rd Annual SAGB Conference where the industry comes together to hear from Ministers, amongst others, about market opportunities, management of stocks, the UK market for shellfish, international trade and more.
It was hugely interesting and informative with talks from many leading experts within the shellfish industry.
Discussions around current legislation, the challenges facing the industry and market insights were on the agenda, including a detailed update on the proposed Codes of Best Practice for Crustacean Welfare that the industry is developing.
These voluntary codes are being written to cover the whole industry, including retailers. Sue and Rex are involved in the steering group alongside DEFRA, SAGB and other interested parties.
The working group was engaged to create codes, which once established, will ensure that all decapod crustaceans are handled correctly and humanely throughout the journey from sea to plate; looking at good practice, what could be considered best practice, and also where there might be better ways of doing things
