C Fayre — Largs
As we showcase our inaugural Award of Excellence recipients across the nation, the National Federation of Fishmongers is immensely proud to shine the spotlight on a true Scottish institution: C Fayre in Largs.
For over 30 years in Largs—spanning a lifetime in the trade, John and his family represent the absolute essence of traditional fishmongery, where incredible craftsmanship, deep knowledge, and community care are passed proudly from generation to generation.
Reflecting on their entry, the NFF judging panel praised the extraordinary depth of skill and family continuity behind the counter:
"Having entered the trade alongside your father as a teenager, you have now spent more than 50 years in fishmongery and have successfully run C Fayre in Largs since 1994. Your recognition in 2019 as the first Master Fishmonger in Scotland is a fitting reflection of that lifetime of knowledge and craftsmanship. Connor has worked alongside you for 17 years and intends to continue the business when you retire, while your grandson Adam is already part of the Saturday team."
The judges were equally moved by C Fayre's deep-rooted dedication and heart for their local community:
"From delivering to elderly customers who value the conversation as much as the fish, to remaining open and delivering food to vulnerable customers during Covid, this is clearly a business that has become part of the fabric of the community it serves. C Fayre demonstrates that excellence isn't about being the biggest or the most elaborate – it is about skill, quality, trust and consistency."
To John, Connor, Adam, and the entire team at C Fayre: thank you for keeping traditional fishmongering skills alive and setting such an inspiring, benchmark standard for Scotland and the entire United Kingdom. Congratulations on your thoroughly deserved Award of Excellence!
